Multi Material Upgrade 2S (MMU2S) is a brand new and improved version of the Multi Material Upgrade 2.0. With an easier calibration process, a new filament sensor, and a standalone filament buffer, the MMU2S is more reliable than ever before.

WITH THE ORIGINAL PRUSA MMU2S WE ARE INTRODUCING:

NEW FILAMENT SENSOR

With the MMU2S we managed to sense not only that the filament is present, but that it actually reached the Bondtech gears. The filament sensor detects when the idler doors open a bit as the filament pushes Bondtechs apart. MMU2S is much more reliable regarding reloading filaments and the calibration process is also simplified.

FILAMENT BUFFER

The MMU2S comes with the filament buffer, a device designed to prevent filament tangling during loading / unloading process. The buffer allows you to position the five filament spools more freely and also saves valuable space on your desk.

THOROUGHLY TESTED

The testing process of the MMU2S took 2 months to finish, we used 20 printers and we printed 478 test blocks designed to test frequent switching of all five filaments. The total value of filament changes was nearly 600.000. More than 93 % of this prints were successfully completed.

Multi Material Upgrade 2S (MMU2S) is the second generation of our unique multi-material addon, which enables your Original Prusa i3 MK2.5S or MK3S/+ 3D printer to print with up to 5 filaments at the same time.

Compared to MMU1, the new MMU2S went through a major revision, resulting in a simpler and more reliable design. The number of simultaneously supported filaments increased to a total of five, which enables the users to print even more complex and more colorful objects.

MMU2S comes with a redesigned body and a new filament loading mechanism. Instead of the previous Bowden system, the new unit uses a direct-drive feed and a single PTFE tube to lead the selected filament to the extruder. The motorized selector head has a F.I.N.D.A filament sensor and a built-in blade, which prevents filament jamming.

Introducing MMU2S

How does MMU2S work?

MAIN FEATURES

The most significant new features of Original Prusa i3 MMU2S

COMPLETELY REDESIGNED

MMU2S has a brand new body with a rotating pulley barrel and a single extruder motor. Load up to 5 filaments and the selector head with a filament-cutting blade will take care of automatic loading and unloading.

FIVE MATERIALS

The second generation of our Multi Material Upgrade supports up to 5 filaments loaded at the same time. Apart from usual materials like ABS, PETG or PLA, the MMU 2.0 also works great with soluble supports (BVOH or PVA).

DIRECT DRIVE

We have replaced the previous generation's Bowden system with a new direct-drive mechanism. This change is a major step forward in making the filament loading process more reliable and less prone to jamming.

F.I.N.D.A FILAMENT SENSOR

Meet F.I.N.D.A! It's essentialy a repurposed P.I.N.D.A probe, which now serves as a filament sensor. It works on a mechanical basis - the string of filament lifts a small stainless steel ball and F.I.N.D.A detects its proximity.

WIPE INTO INFILL / OBJECT

Our slicing software Slic3r PE comes with full MMU 2.0 support and a set of useful features, such as Smart wipe tower, Wipe into infill or Wipe into object. These features help you save time and filament.

FILAMENT BUFFER INCLUDED

The MMU2S comes with the Filament Buffer, a device designed to prevent filament tangling during loading / unloading process. The buffer allows you to position the five filament spools more freely and also saves valuable space on your desk.

It's good, but I had several problems

I had to unjam it several times and I unmounted it for the moment, because I use it less than I expected. Coloured prints are cool, but it's more a project than a workhorse.

Good But Can Be Great

Four Stars: Kit as-is. Community discussion will detail the ups-and-downs of the MMU2 out of the box. I'm not writing this to re-hash gripes.

Five Stars: Kit with community upgrades (just like the MK3S+ itself).

Referencing MMU assembly instructions...

Chapter 5, Step 11: You'll probably need to manually re-align the pulley teeth after 30-ish hours.

Chapter 6, Step 13: Replace with a push connector part (Thingiverse 3233579) and buy the needed components. Avoids pinched/overtightened PTFE tubes.

Chapter 7: SKIP! Instead, use Thingiverse 3338467 or many similar remixes. You'll need to make these beforehand. No buffer, no mess. Gravity-based and clutch/spring-based rewinders abound. I have a wall-mounted set of 5 spring-based rewinders above/behind my printer. You can even repurpose the bearings included for spool holders inside the spools of some rewinder designs.

NEVER cut PTFE tubing with scissors! Use a razor blade or boxcutter; your MMU will thank you. The slight collapse caused by scissors pinches the tube, resulting in MMU jams.

I bought the pre-assembled MK3S because I didn't feel like dealing with building a printer, but my MMU worked on the first try. It printed for 3 days solid before needing aforementioned pulley teeth realignment.

Highly recommended with some tweaks.

A cool addition to your MK3, but clearly not for everyone.

First of all this is a kit that requires you to have good knowledge about how a 3d printer works and operates in general. I would not recommend this product to anyone new to FDM printers.
That said, it is a great product and when it works it works. You need to take great care in adjusting the involved sensors and idler tension, but as soon as you got that set up perfectly you will have very little problems.
It took me a day to build this and it just worked from the very first try, but later I had to make some adjustments to the FINDA and IR sensor. Now its really reliable and I can't really see any reason you would remove it or run without it. Even when I am not printing multi materials, its still nice to just select your color in slicer and hit print :)

Clever design but diffcult to calbrate

I have used MMU2 since it came out and am still pleased with it. It is however difficult to calibrate: The tension of the MMU idler and the printer extruder must be just right, otherwise you run in to trouble. Calibrating the IR sensor is less difficult, but still very important to get it precisely where it should be.

Perfect addition

At this point i have not managed to fully test it out (only 3 colour prints so far)

There was no instructions included but all instructions are available on the prusa website which was great :) there is handy printer guide for when it is up and running which is super handy when setting up the slicer.
Make sure to note what part of the instructions you are reading depending on the printer version you have (noted at the top of the page) installation took me around 4 hours then put it straight to work. So far so good, no jams, no quality issues so 10/10 going to purchase one or 2 more with the next order of printers. Both the I3 MK3S+ and the MMU2S were great fun to build up and even more fun to put to work.

Huge thumbs up to Josef and the Team you are an inspiration.

Great if you are ready to trouble shoot alot

If you know that you will need multi materials for alot of your prints and are willing to trouble shoot a bunch of issues over and over, then I would say go for the MMU. When it works with no flaws it is absolutely amazing! But if you only plan to use it every once in a while for a little desk toy or functional part, it is 100% pointless to get and you will waste filament and you will be trouble shooting most of the time you print.

Add Cooling moves to live "Tune" menu

Hi - I agree with most reviews and the fact that you need to be an advanced user to use the MMU2S , but with all the teething problems sorted like spool and tubes placement and quality of filament. It is a very good option to add to the MK3s or other compatible devices. Three stars are primarily due to the very poor tube and spool management system. It is so sensitive to any bends, filament parameters, alignment etc, that it takes a LOT of work to get running right if you choose your own placement based on your space and location constraints.
Suggestion for Prusa – Can you please add the option to adjust the number of cooling moves to the live “tune” menu that is active during the print ? I ask this because I have noticed that while the start with let’s say 2 cooling moves may work fine but if the room gets hotter or colder, the behavior changes, especially during long two day prints. This causes the filament tips to be deformed in one way or the other. At that time it is very frustrating that you know for a fact that adjusting the cooling move will make life easier, but since the print is 20 hours in – it is really hard to decide to stop the print, reslice with new cooling moves and start again – knowing the environment may change over the print lifecycle again and the print becoming a nightmare to complete with blobs and what not. If this feature is already there I apologize. I have not found it. And just a note – adjusting temperature, speed or other parameters available during print are not sufficient to solve deformed tips.

Good, but needs a little more work

Very easy to assemble, took only about 30 minutes. Putting it on the printer and calibrating the idler tension and FINDA took another hour. Works perfectly now, probably jams once per few hundred hours of printing. The filament buffer was just plain unusable, I can’t insert filament into it easily. Spools are mounted to a roof, and a quite sophisticated setup of filament guides makes it impossible to tangle. The buffer needs lots of work, and the loading/unloading of filament can be made much more easier.

Not reliable. Not worth the effort

After a year of on and off tackling to get this tuned to work properly and many many many hours on chat with Prusa and much online research I have come to the realization that this product is just not ready for release. It is so delicate and sensitive that you will likely never print a part without loading and unloading issues. Save yourself some time and money and skit this one. Like my MK3 but this is just not ever going to do what it was advertised. Prusa just left all us MMU2s customers out in the wind. Very little information on operation, how to solve issues. Ughhh. I really gave it my best efforts to make it work and I have an extensive technical background.

No multimaterial printing after 1 year of use.

I had the unit for almost a year now, and there is a lot of trouble with it. It reduced my otherwise usable single color printer to an unusable multi color. Today I still have issues getting single color prints running through the MMU unit. The product has way to many flaues that it is worth buying. I am very happy with all of the other prusa products I have bough, so this is the first negative experience I had with their products.
