"Heating" pauses in prints.

Dec 05, 2018 6:30 pm

Hey guys. I just upgraded the firmware to the latest November release and everything seams to be working pretty well until I started to print out some lithophanes. While printing, I'm noticing that about every 5-10 minutes the printer will pause mid-layer for about 5 seconds. The display will say "heating..." and then resume the print. Later on in the print, the print will suddenly stop and alarm, asking me to unload and reload the filament before it goes back to printing. When that first happened, there was a definite under extrusion following that change out. I figured that I mist have a clog in the nozzle, so I changed out to a different nozzle. That fixed the problem for a little while, but now I'm seeing the same issue again!

Pauses and filament change outs are death to any lithophane, so I really need to get this fixed to finish up my remaining Christmas gifts. Any suggestions of what I should do from here?

Turn off your filament sensor and try again.

I have the same problem, the printer pauses and says "heating", however both nozzle and bed temperatures have the correct values and this only seem to happen when I print 0.1 or 0.05.
I don't see how the filament sensor can do this.

I'm seeing the same thing. Only seems to happen with white filament so far. Didn't happen with Blue, black, or grey. So that sounds like a filament sensor problem to me too.

I turned off the sensor and the problem went away. I think this might be a firmware problem, never had an issue until I recently updated the firmware.

I had similar problem this morning. The printer paused and says "heating".
I am not 100% sure, but I think in my case the displayed temperature was 200° instead of 210°.

This afternoon, I figured out that the temperature seemed to stabilize 10° lower than the target temperature after about 10 min.
Then I set the temperature to 200°, and back to 210° it goes back to 210° for about 10 min, then drops again to 200° (see attached octoprint screenshot).

Disabling the filament sensor solved the issue in my case. Filament used was Light Blue PLA from FormFutura.
I have recently ugraded to 3.5.0 and did not have this issue before upgrading.

I'll just add on as also having this issue.

It'll print just fine for a few layers or more, then settle on 200deg w/ PLA while the screen indicates 210deg. It will pause and display "heating....", will sit here for several minutes, and most of the time it will eventually start up again. I noticed if I went in and manually increased the temp during the pause it will restart. Then I can go back and set it to 210 again.

As it turns out, I just restarted a print this happened on (print was ruined due to the glob of PLA on the part from sitting in one spot at 200deg for so long) and turned off the filament sensor. I'll edit this post in a few hours when it's done on whether or not that worked as a workaround to the "heating pause" problem in my situation as well.

Update: after disabling filament sensor the print completed just fine with no pausing

yep me too..

All though it solves the problem turning of the sensor , it is still not a solution what if your filament runs out !!!

I had the same issue connected via octoprint - random pausing which really messed with my prints. Currently mid-experimentation to see whether various combinations of factors avoid it, but I had already turned off my filament sensor and was still getting the problem. I left it to complete anyway ignoring the "heating..." message but it actually eventually failed entirely - the printer gave an error message (which I neglected to write down unfortunately) along the lines of "Heat protection - waited too long" or words to that effect.

I guess these are all related to https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware/issues/1521

Has anyone tried FW 3.6.0? Same issues?

Yes, 3.6.0 still have this issue too.
